I couldn't help but notice that a "liberal, feminist" website was the one to post this whiny, droning list of complaints from former Borders employees.

My very first reaction was "OMG! NO wonder the bookstore chain is now out of business!!" And it was not lost on me that, the only Borders I have visited in these past few years is being replaced by a Joseph Beth Booksellers. I sincerely hope it will be a carbon copy of the Joe Beth I frequent. Cuz, ya see.... I feel welcomed there. Even if I am running in at the last minute with a "quick question" about a birthday gift I need. Or if I have my little niece in tow, and she wants to "play" in some sales clerk's hallowed "section."

Let me be blunt. If this article, in any way, represents the attitude of most Borders Books employees... well, the chain deserves to be bankrupt. And the clerks jobless. I seriously hope that some of them will get off their whiny asses, and be hired on by Joseph-Beth. Where they can get a lesson in customer service.

One more thing. And I'll continue to be frank. Take one look at the smartass "oh yeah" responses at Jezebel and you will know that our economy has little hope of any kind of marketing recovery if these kiddos are the ones in charge.

Which brings me back to my original statement about the article being on a "liberal, feminist" blog. In 2008 I got the same kinda "Borders attitude" from those gals. You know, the "look down my nose at the older lady with the kid. Even if she did fight for my Title IX scholarship, and my right to reproductive freedom" attitude.

Bah! I can shop elsewhere, thank you.

I watched THIS DOCUMENTARY Thursday evening, and I wept. For the first time since those planes hit the towers.I especially cried when the Rabbi chanted the words of the dying victims.

I've been in denial, I admit. And the reason is simple.

My beautiful daughter was born on 9/11. It is a joyous day for me and my family. And I won't let some Islamist facists take that away from us. Ever.

DD turned 13 the day those planes hit the towers. Yes, I remember it. Well. I sent her to school with a $1 bill pinned to her shirt. About the time folks started greeting her and adding to her stash... the news came into her school. They turned on the TVs. One of her teachers told her they felt sorry for her... having her birthday "forever ruined."

Today my youngest turns 23. She is everything a mother could dream of for her child. An Engineering student with a good GPA, and wonderful job prospects. In a loving, stable relationship. And, as I said, beautiful. By anyone's standards.

This was an appalling statement coming from an American leader. What’s next? Will he say he isn’t “second-guessing” and “fully understands” that women are stoned for adultery in Iran?

Chai Ling, a two-time Nobel Peace Prize nominee and former leader of the 1989 Tiananmen Square Democracy Movement, told me she was “shocked and troubled” by Biden’s statement. Ling founded the organization All Girls Allowed to fight the one-child policy, which affects most couples and is designed to limit growth in China, which at 1.3 billion people is the world’s most populous country.

“On behalf of all the Chinese women and girls,” she says, Biden’s “statements are very hurtful. The one-child policy means the child has to be killed, whether it is forced or coerced through pressure. The women don’t feel like they have a choice. There is a fundamental disconnect when the U.S. party that claims to be "pro-choice" sympathizes with any government's decision to intervene in a woman's fundamental right to decide if her baby will be born. (Or worse, be killed after she is born.) SYD is, and always has been, pro-choice. I find this "gaffe" to be telling. And I suspect that my "pro-life" sisters (and brothers) will agree with me on this point: Infanticide and Gendercide are no gaffing matters.

It's a sad day for the Dem party when it's pervasive bent toward "cultural relativism" takes the place of sound judgement and moral conviction. To the point of winking and nodding at abhorrant, anti-woman policies like the "one child" rule in China.

The Pall That Came Over Me As I Watched The Rejoicing ...

I felt a strange pall come over me this morning. After hearing the news of Osama Bin Laden's death. And watching some footage of young people rejoicing in D.C.

Something makes me feel uneasy about the whole thing. Not sure what. Is it the the potential for retaliation? The hastiness with which Bin Laden was buried at sea? What is wrong with me? Don't I love America??

Maybe I was just flashing back to that awful morning, when my sister got me out of the bathtub to tell me "turn on the TV. A jet just hit the twin towers." (It was my daughter's 13th birthday. We had just sent her off to school with a dollar pinned to her shirt.)

Perhaps it's the killing of my own ideals that I mourn for? The silencing of the peacemongers I once stood shoulder to shoulder with, as we protested the war in Iraq.

I think I am dismayed to see what I can only describe as the "New Left" beating it's breast in triumph. The effectiveness with which the anti-war movement has been silenced by this president. Not that I always agreed with the likes of "Code Pink" or anything. It's just that... well ... knowing they were there to protest the "absolute power" of our military oriented government made me feel "safer" somehow.

Why can't I just feel happy? 8~/

I attended this movie last evening, with other family members. It is a decent documentary. However, we agreed, it went too far. No group advocating for humane treatment of any dog should be arguing against spay/ neuter legislation. It's a shame that the interviewee named Dawn Capp was able to sneak that little agenda in there. Really. :~/

That said... the presentation of CDC dogbite statistics, and mounting media bias against the pit bull breed were excellent. And the other interviewees' anti-BSL discussions were quite good. I recommend that a version be released without the anti-S/N nonsense in it.

If it is, I will be the first to buy a copy.

In the past week, our tiny rescue has taken in four mama cats with litters of at least five each. And we are just now seeing the rev-up to kitten season.

I mourn for all the little lives that will be lost this Spring. Because there just simply are not enough places for them to go on living...

We are building a new sanctuary now. To house some of the mamas, after their kittens are weaned. But... it will never be enough.

That is the saddest part of rescue work.

Breasts Are Keeping Me Away From Politics, Oh Well...

I am starting to miss all my PUMA friends. And all the blogs I have been so addicted to for the past two years. But... seriously.... sometimes real life takes precedence.

Not only is the rescue work running me ragged. But I just found out a good friend of mine has breast cancer. I hate that. I really do. She of all people... one of the most honest, hard-working, caring people on the planet.

Another friend of mine has delivered a baby at 30 weeks gestation. I drove out to see her today. Her milk supply is not what she wants it to be....

You may wonder what the two cases above have in common. Or what they have to do with me, a pet rescuer??

Well... here's the thing... I spent several years of my life working as a mom/baby nurse and lactation consultant. Ask me a question about breasts... and I can generally answer. With my eyes closed. And hands tied behind my back.

So, here I am, during Women's History Month... returning to the world of breast health. October is supposed to be the month of the pink ribbon... but, no. Not for me. Not this time.

Politics will have to wait.

Mo Hassan's jury deliberated for just under and hour.

Ryan Widmer's jury took about 12 hours to find him guilty.

Both men stand accused of killing their wives. Both, it seems, see themselves as victims. One man, Hassan, engaged in a form of "honor killing" by beheading. While the other, Widmer, simply drowned his wife in a bathtub.

Still, the similarity in the two men's reactions has me puzzled. I have to wonder why? Why do two men, from very different cultures, murder their wives and then imagine themselves victims??

Is it a form of sociopathy? Or is there another dynamic in play??

Same Message From Palin and Obama. Which Will Be Remembered? (That is the question.)

By most PUMA accounts that I have read so far, President Obama delivered a decent speech last evening. Though many feel that using a memorial service to launch a campaign slogan was tacky.

My take:

I think it is fair to assert that Mr. Obama's speech may not be what we remember about this fateful week. Except, perhaps, to bemoan the poor taste of printing t-shirts for a memorial service.

It could well be Sarah's one-liner "Blood Libel" that sticks in our minds. (Given, it will mainly be remembered because the Left is making such a huge deal out of it. And the middle of our beloved country is waking up saying "well, yeah... that's what this smear campaign was.")

I have to say that I am pleasantly surprised to hear the same essential message coming from Obama and Palin. "Together We Thrive" is not all that different from "Cut the blood libel." It's just that one will be remembered. And one, despite being emblazoned on a gazillion t-shirts, may not be.

I hope this is my final statement on this subject.

I sit here shaking my head. Because I was once a HUGE fan of PBS. In the 80's and 90s I relied heavily on McNeil-Lehrer and McLaughlin, to keep me up to date on what was happening in Washington. My kids literally cut their teeth watching these programs every Friday evening. Then my husband and I would talk to them about the issues. We took them to meet Mort Kondracke "in person" once. (Have his autograph to prove it.) We adored Eleanor Clift. Admired them all. Told the kids public journalism was important. Noble, even. Warned them about the dangers inherent in relying on commercial reporting.

In 2008 I *tried* to go back to PBS. For old times sake, I guess. But, I was gravely disappointed. Ifill was everywhere with her obvious Obama swooning. Eleanor (bless her heart) even became an Obama mouthpiece after the DNC gave Hillary's delegates to him. I was aghast when the McCain camp decided that Ifill could moderate the debate between Palin and Biden. (Gwen did her party bosses proud, too. And that is when I swore off PBS "news.")

What has happened to independent journalism in this country?

Oh, and... why the heck does WAPO have to caution it's "journalists" not to bicker with their readers on Twitter? Shouldn't they know that already? Did they skip college or something?? Remember when State Rep. Steve Driehaus of Ohio was strong armed into voting FOR Obamacare? I distinctly remember hearing something to the effect of "we'll take care of you in 2010, Steve" at that time.

Well FORGET IT, Steve. The Dem Party has to cut its losses, you know, hence...

they're scaling back advertising plans to help a number of lawmakers including Reps. Betsy Markey of Colorado, Harry Teague of New Mexico and Steve Driehaus and Mary Jo Kilroy of Ohio. They've also cut back on ad campaigns to defend Democratic-held open seats in Indiana and Kansas.

Can't say *I* didn't see it coming. And, really... it's a shame if Steve didn't. Cuz now, not only are we set to lose the district... but he is embroiled in lawsuits to stop the "pro-life" slander that threatens to end his political career in these parts. To make matters worse ... his lawmaker sister, Denise Driehaus ... may go down with him.

What a shame.

Which means, essentially, that I have nowhere to go in the upcoming election.

This weekend, so far, I have been visited by the Democratic party (at my door) twice. They are polling to see if we plan to vote.

DH tells them he's not voting at all. And I tell them "only for women."

Needless to say.... it didn't go over well. Wonder if they'll be back today???

Jezebel's analysis of how the Left is losing Feminists is here: in the NYT.

Of course, NYT's editors want to believe the understory to Jezebel's piece. Namely, that Conservative women have no claim to Feminism. So she gets a primo spot in their opinion section.

But Anna Belle is actually more spot on, as she queries:

"When is the left going to realize that these heroes of America’s past belong to all Americans, that they are not the comfort toys of the left, which is how they treat them when they say that some Americans can’t appreciate them? "

I mean... shouldn't we want ALL Americans to celebrate the lives of Martin Luther King and Susan B. Anthony? Do we really want (more of Anna Belle's words here)

King (to be) like a Dora doll for the Sharpton marchers; (or ) like a dead and honored American by Beck and his ralliers, who paid no mind to the reactionary march Sharpton scheduled only after Beck’s rally was scheduled. Isn’t it worth asking during all this why Sharpton and other civil rights leaders didn’t see fit to honor King’s memory with an event of their own this year just because King was worth it, rather than reacting to a bunch of Americans who want to exercise their rights as well?

Seems to me this is the same kind of question we should be asking about Anthony. Do we really want her to be a "Dora doll" for certain kinds of Feminists? (Many of whom cannot be bothered to read her works, because they might collide with their own ideas about what Feminism should look like.) Do we want the likes of Susan B. reduced to a caricature of the complex individual that once chided:

"Just Tell Them I have worked 40 years to make the Women's Suffrage platform broad enough for Atheists and Agnostics to stand upon, and now if need be I will fight the next 40 to keep it Catholic enough to permit the straightest Orthodox religionist to speak or pray and count her beads upon."

I'm getting the same eerily creepy feeling, from some of my friends and family on the Left, about the issues we face in regards to Islam in America. The questions are complex enough that I do not want to jump on the anti-GZ mosque or pro-GZ mosque bandwagons. I want to take my time and read ALL sides. To make my own decision, thank you.

But, any time I talk about the writings of Ayaan Hirsi Ali or Phyllis Chesler, I get the "Oh, they are *Conservatives*" eye roll. As if that somehow negates their first hand experiences and Feminist interpretations? WTF???

I mean, doesn't anybody care about the TRUTH any more? Is everything a political game to these folks that I used to support and vote for?

I have deliberately steered away from commenting on the President's half-assed positions on the GZ Mosque and immigrant rights. But THIS is personal. I have a gay son, you see. And I know... first hand.... how important marriage rights were to him, when he lost his partner to a freak accident three years ago. (Thank God they were living in Boston at the time!)

Mr. Obama, you should be ashamed. As an American I ask... why can't you take a stand??
