"Just Tell Them...

I have worked 40 years to make the Women's Suffrage platform broad enough for Atheists and Agnostics to stand upon, and now if need be I will fight the next 40 to keep it Catholic enough to permit the straightest Orthodox religionist to speak or pray and count her beads upon."

I'm Sorry, Mr. President, But This Doesn't Look Like Someone We Can Afford to Fire

Did you know that the military is still discharging soldiers for being openly gay?

One of these soldiers is California's own Lt. Dan Choi. In March he went on Rachel Maddow's show and spoke honestly about his sexual orientation. As a result in April the Army sent him a letter of discharge. Lt. Choi is fighting the discharge and fighting the discriminatory "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy.

I just signed a petition from the Courage Campaign to President Obama, urging him to do the right thing by stopping the discharge of Lt. Dan Choi and other LGBT soldiers, and asking President Obama to uphold his promise to repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." They are going to deliver it to the president and it's important that as many people as possible speak out right now.

Will you join me in signing and urge your friends to do the same?:

President Obama, Don't Fire Dan!

Dan knew two things when he joined the military: one, that the "don't ask, don't tell" law was still in effect and, two, that openly gay people are not allowed to serve. With that knowledge, he opted to join anyway. For him to now, "out" himself and cry against the rules is more than just wanting them changed; it's also wanting the "publicity" for his own political agenda. There is still such a thing as "chain of command" in the military and when Dan went on live TV and disparaged the military because they are discharging him under the very rules that he agreed to abide by when he joined, he broke that chain. That is, sometimes, a death sentence in a war zone. If the folks don't follow ALL the rules in the military they can wreck havoc, gay or not.

  2. It is high time that DADT is overturned. And it is something Mr. Obama promised he would do.

I hope he does so in time to retain Mr. Choi's desperately needed services.
