Parents and Kids at this school in New Mexico seem to think it's a form of abuse.
Let me confess... I ate a cheese sandwich just about every day when I was in school. Packed it myself. Sometimes my mom would throw in an apple or orange. Other times she gave me a dime to buy two stick pretzels.
With the rates of obesity in kids today.... maybe a simple sandwich at lunch time could be part of the cure? Am I being too conservative?? I simply can't fathom why kids think they should be served McDonald's burgers and fries while in school.
I do not understand the outrage.
Can somebody here splain it to me?

I agree with you. I read another blog that was outraged by this because they said it discriminated against poor kids who, what, where stigmatized because they only got a cheese sandwich. This is sad. I can remember when the only thing I would eat for lunch was peanut butter and jelly...every day. Loved it! And the hot lunches at school were gross...couldn't pay me to eat them. Kids sure are spoiled these days and people seem to feel entitled. Remember when mom and dad would say when you didn't want to eat your vegetables, think about all of those poor starving kids in China? (they aren't so poor anymore). I would be embarassed if I lived in NM.
ReplyDeleteThese parents that are too poor to give their kids lunch money are probably the ones I see at the grocery with food stamps, but paying cash for their beer and cigs.
ReplyDeleteI think a cheese sandwich would be welcomed in most third world countries. These parents are too whiny and should be thankful their kids are getting fed!

ReplyDeleteTo their credit, the Albuquerque Public Schools Board is standing fast on the cheese sandwich policy. They are reporting that they've collected about $50,000 in delinquent lunch charges. And, even better, they've signed up more kids for free or reduced cost meals.
Way to go Albuquerque School Board!
So then it appears that at least some parents had the money but preferred to spend it on other priorities rather than lunches for their children based on that info from Albuquergue.
