"Just Tell Them...

I have worked 40 years to make the Women's Suffrage platform broad enough for Atheists and Agnostics to stand upon, and now if need be I will fight the next 40 to keep it Catholic enough to permit the straightest Orthodox religionist to speak or pray and count her beads upon."

A Speck of Sanity on the Horizon: Common People's Sensibilities Winning Out Over Hollywood's Love of a Child Rapist. (Sign the petition to jail Roman

Yes, the tide of public opinion appears to be turning. Or maybe not? Maybe Americans never did buy the anti-woman apologism that the MSM, with it's Hollywood jerk--a-lot friends were peddling.

This "Polanski the Child Rapist" story is giving me hope.

Why?

Because the sensibilities of common Americans have been awakened, and seem to be winning out. In the hours since the story broke... and the apologists started singing their sick little song.... the commoners have revolted. Asking us to excuse a man who, while in his forties, drugged and raped a 13 year old... is simply a bridge too far. They have underestimated our resolve.

We want Roman Polanski jailed!

  1. Hi SYD,

Welcome back from CA. I just signed the petition. In the past few days we've heard about Jaycee Dugard, Elizabeth Smart, and now this breaking news. On what grounds does America tell other countries to shape up on human rights?

    Let's not forget Mackenzie Phillips.

Until Polanski was arrested, there was much discussion of her case, but then it ended. We need to remember that Mackenzie, still in her teens, had blacked out and woke up to find her father having sex with her, which is rape plus incest. She went on to have what she calls "consensual" sex with him over the next ten years. I don't think it was truly consensual. I think Mackenzie's situation was much like Jaycee Dugard's and Elizabeth Smart's, except that it was her own father who kept her strung out on drugs and booze so he could use her sexually. He had her shooting up cocaine when she was 14, after starting her on rolling joints at 10.

John Phillips is dead so he can't be tried for his crimes but Mackenzie's story could encourage other incest victims to speak out and file charges against their abusers.

Women must continue to speak out against all rape and incest.

  3. There is no such thing as "consensual sex" between a child and an adult. Mackenzie was repeatedly raped. No "consensual" about it. The fact that it was also incest only makes it worse for the child.... because it is the ultimate betrayal of trust.

As Liberals/ Progressives we can NOT get in the habit of writing off these kinds of travesties in the name of "cultural sensitivity" or any such nonsense.

Child rape, and incest are EVIL. There. I said it. E-V-I-L.

I'm no prude. Nor am I a fundie evangelical. But, wrong is wrong. And when we accept certain kinds of "wrongs" because of who committed them.... we are not acting on the side of good.

Nice to see you here, Modem X and Rev. Bergman.

Children are to be protected and kept from harm. There is simply no excuse to what Polanski or priests or whomever. It disgusts me that the Hollywood types will forgive a Polanski but condemn priests. The end result is the same - they ruined a child.
