The War on White Women: Day Six of the Letterman Saga

It was PUMA For Life that called my attention to THIS quite excellent article by Andrea Peyser at the New York Post:
"While you were watching David Letterman -- a bitter guy who never saw a woman or a Republican he could stand -- trash Sarah Palin's 14-year-old daughter by "joking" that she was date-raped by Alex Rodriguez and stalked by Eliot Spitzer, you may have missed the memo. Dave's in good company.

His struggling brother up the dial, Conan O'Brien, on Thursday night was having a blast slurring women and Jews -- two groups that may constitute the last permissible sick-comedy staples."

snip
"women, specifically white women, make up the last group that one may freely stereotype to get a cheap laugh.

Not surprisingly, the left has been notoriously silent on the issue. Where are the marches? The boycotts? The National Organization for Women did elect Letterman into its "Media Hall of Shame." How scary.

Letterman replied that he thought he was joking about the sex life of Palin's 18-year-old daughter, not the 14-year-old!"

"How scary" is right!

If you hop over to Women State you can see where a large part of the problem lies. Apparently, certain "men of color" have determined that white women have never really been targeted the way they have. Therefore, jokes about adult Latino men having public sex with 14 year old white girls are not as bad as, say, jokes about black men eating watermelon.

(Whatever, Al. Never mind that I, and many others like me, have defended your positions over the years. Just as Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady-Stanton once defended Frederick Douglass' right to vote. Until he brushed them aside.)

History does, indeed, repeat itself.

On the bright side, though:

PUMA PAC reports on the state of the Letterman apology. It has evolved to be a bit more sincere, in the wake of the "Fire David Letterman" movement. But, there is still work to be done!

And, Tennessee Guerilla Women are reporting that an interesting thing has happened on "The View." Apparently, Ms. Behar was afraid she might get the same boot in the butt as Mr. Letterman. So she is changing her tune a bit.

Finally, a word of encouragement from Murphy at PUMA PAC:

"This is how it’s done. Incident by incident. With constant vigilance by us AND the active participation of our members to make those phone calls and send those letters EVERY DAMN DAY. Sooner or later, it WILL become as unacceptable to make jokes about slutty flight attendants and sexual assault as it is to make “jokes” about watermelon and gorillas."

What about today's protest? Anybody have an updated report?

"Sarah Palin is a Bad Mother" and Other Beastie Boi Fantasies: Letterman Day Five in the PUMAsphere

The beastie boiz are at it again. Or should I stay, still? Here we see Ed Schulz and Donny Deutch at MSNBC declaring that "Sarah Palin is a bad mother." Why? Because she defended her daughter:

The PUMAsphere dares to disagree:

Tennessee Guerilla Women respond to the bogus charges.

HILLBUZZ continues to lead the charge in the Letterman boycott. And PUMA PAC adds the effort to their "daily prowl."

The New Agenda points out that Letterman's writers (you know, the ones responsible for researching and writing his jokes) have, in fact, PARADED THEIR OWN DAUGHTERS INTO THE PUBLIC EYE! TNA asks us to respect those girls anyway. Even though their fathers are dickheads.

Besides "prowling" the Letterman advertisers.... I am proud to report that I am also slowly making the rounds with small donations. To all of my favorite news sources (those listed above plus a few more.) I am giving $17 to each of them for the 17% of female elected public officials that hold high office. Anyone that is fighting to increase that number, deserves my support!

Carry on,

The "Fire David Gutterman" Movement Takes Form: Day Four of the Letterman Saga

Nope. This is NOT going away!

HILLBUZZ asks... "What would Al Sharpton do? And then they answer themselves:

"Does your town have a CBS window on the world' style studio where the morning news is broadcast with an open window looking out to the street? If so, head over there with signs condemning Olive Garden, MARS Candy, and Kelloggs for supporting the statutory rape of minors by way of sponsoring Letterman’s program.

Scare the living daylights out of Letterman’s advertisers, get them to drop this show, and CBS will then be forced to deal with Letterman once and for all.

Tell everyone Al Sharpton sent you, and learn from the master."

Further, I received this letter from one Laureen at Team Sarah today:

“FIRE DAVID LETTERMAN RALLY”

Subj: Fire David Letterman Rally at Ed Sullivan Theater in NYC at 4:30 pm Monday June 15 is on !

I am pleased to report that we have received enough volunteer leader commitments from the now 2,253 people on this mailing list to make a FIRM DECISION to go forward with a planned FIRE DAVID LETTERMAN RALLY, currently scheduled to be held from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm this Monday June 15 outside the Ed Sullivan Theater, located at 1697 Broadway in New York City.

If you live anywhere within a 4 hour driving distance of New York City, please plan on attending this event. Bring your own signs (be creative but PG rated!). We will be announcing more details over the weekend so stay tuned. We need more volunteers to help our “Project Servant-Leaders”, so please email me at michaelpatrickleahy@gmail.com if you can provide some time.

Laureen Cummings has agreed to serve as our “Project Servant-Leader” responsible for our Media Relations.

Marie Wilkinson and others have agreed to share “Project Servant-Leader” responsibilities in the Social Media arena.

We have volunteers for our logistics and volunteer coordination areas as well, and will be announcing the names of that leadership group over the weekend.

Keep telling your friends on the internet and in person to sign the letter to CBS asking them to fire David Letterman at our website, http://www.firedavidletterman.com

Two additional pieces of news to show that we and others are already making some progress:

1. CBS has received so many negative comments about Letterman they have shut down the comments section of their website.

2. A leading New York State Legislator, Brian Kolb, publicly called today for CBS to fire Letterman.

Thanks for all your help. Stay tuned for news over the weekend about how you can help make this coming Monday’s “FIRE DAVID LETTERMAN RALLY” a success !

Finally, we are continuing to target family oriented sponsors of the Letterman show with our calling and writing campaigns. Mars Candy. Olive Garden. Kelloggs.

Meanwhile, if you haven't seen Sarah's response on "The Today Show" yet the interview is linked At the New Agenda. Five posts after their PRESS Release. (Note: TNA has taken this very seriously. Be sure to read ALL of their Letterman related posts. They are informative and helpful, if you have to discuss the matter with some of your "Progressive" friends.)

That is all for now. Carry on, troops.

David Letterman Jumps the Misogyny Shark, Promotes Rape of a Minor. TIME TO TAKE ACTION!

All over the PUMAsphere this morning, the call has gone out. Something simply MUST be done about David Letterman's misogyny.

Here is the call to action from from HILLBUZZ. With a link to Letterman's "top ten" about Sarah Palin's trip to New York. That little video is bad enough.

But NOTHING beats the one linked at The Confluence. Do people really think that raping a fourteen year old is funny? Letterman apparently does. But, I can't believe that the audience actually laughs about Willow Palin being "knocked up" by Alex Rodriguez.

Yes,myiq2xu. It is worse than any of us thought.

Here we see Deadenders trying to handle the situation with humor. Who can blame them? The reality of the rape joke, and the laughter that followed, is beyond what most of us can even take in. (Can you imagine what would have happened if Letterman had said the same about Sasha or Malia?)

If you pop in at PUMA PAC you begin to see the larger issue. How a (well meaning?)president's speech can justify misogyny. Simply by the act of omission. Mr. Obama doesn't say it is OK to behead your wife. But, he doesn't say it is not OK, either. Just like he didn't speak out, but rather joked about it, when Bernie Mac called women "ho's."

Nor will Mr. Obama comment about David Letterman's sanction of statutory rape at a ball park.

To all of my PUMA friends, all who have supported Hillary, even if you do not support Sarah Palin for president:

David Letterman has jumped the proverbial shark. It is time for him to go. ALL decent women and men must stand up against this kind of woman hate. For the good of our daughters, and our country. I encourage all of you to follow the HILLBUZZ link above, and find out how to take action. They are dedicating a month to making old Dave's life miserable.

If you don't do it for Sarah, do it for Willow. Truth be told, she looks a lot like my own daughter. The thought of her being raped at a Ballpark turns my stomach.

Still on Hiatus, But Watching the PUMAsphere from Afar...

I am just not ready to come back to politics. That's all. What can I say? I think I am in the same place that PUMA for Life is. Desirous of a long, lazy summer... after a year of utter political hell. Wanting, also, to rest up for the political battles ahead. On behalf of competent women.

I am still dropping in to read my favorite PUMAs. And I want to thank them for holding down the fort while I rest up. That said, I'll point you to what I saw as some of the better PUMA blog entries posted over the Memorial Holiday weekend. (Not that there weren't many more. But these are the ones I caught.)

Katalusis took E.J. Dionne to task. My response:

Poor E.J. He really thinks this is some kind of great revelation... that Obie-won-can-no-be is talking out of both sides of his mouth. I suspect he was quite pissed to learn that The Holy One lied, first to him and his kind.... then bopped across the hall to lie to the journalists from the opposite side of the aisle.

Well, maybe it is a revelation to him. And, if so, he is a sad excuse for an investigative journalist. Or, *is* he even interested in investigation? Would he rather just regurgitate what "The One" pours into his open jar?

Apparently so. Because even as he expresses the disappointment of the jilted ... he couches it in fantasy: "The establishment Obama is trying to build would make the country better -- more equal, more just and more conscious of the government's constitutional obligations. The far right is being isolated, and Republicans are simply lost. "

How sad is that?

In the wake of one bombing, and one attempted bombing in NYC, I found Madamab's discussion of how "political correctness" abets anti-semitism particularly enlightening. If you have not read it yet, I encourage you to do so.

There are two active watches on for this week. I'll be watching the PUMAsphere for today's news about the court decision on Prop H8. I expect either Tennessee Guerilla Women or HILLBUZZ to break that story first. (Note to self: Must remember to donate to #1 informants!)

The second watch of the week will be for a SCOTUS appointment. The Pick is widely rumored to be a woman. TGW covers the final four this morning. Any of them will be acceptable to me. But, I have a preference for Judge Sotomayor. Perhaps because I think it is high time we saw a Latina on the high court??

OK. Back to my seat in the peanut gallery.....

SYD

PS. H/T to TGW for the photo. Wow! Look at that Supreme Court in Canada. Four women?? It's amazing they can get anything done with all those hormones floating around.... Wonder if they get "periodically upset" and "lash out" the way our President thinks politically powerful women in the United States do?

UPDATE: Afrocity reports that Obama has tapped Sonia Sotomayor for Supreme Court Justice.

UPDATE 2: Tennessee Guerilla Women cover the cowardice of the California court.

If The Economy Gives You Lemons, Make Lemonade (Will Clintonomics Make a Comeback?)

PUMA Bloggers, this morning, are offering ample evidence that we are now in a thirty-five year recovery period. Though we are hoping it will not take us that long to see to see a Palin Lemonade stand on the White House lawn.

Meanwhile, in a "Don't It Always Seem to Go" Joni Mitchell type moment ... fiscally Conservative Republicans (gasp) are embracing Clintonomics. And those of us "fifty-somethings" who raised our children to be "Progressive" world citizens are wondering where we went wrong???

It's a strange ass world. Former Democrats praying for a Palin uprising and Republicans reminiscing about Clintonomics...

What next, I ask. What next?

Reaching Out To Former O-bots: Are You Ready?

The PUMA post of the day comes from Widdershins, where Taggles has deftly posted a call to PUMAs to re-engage Obama voters. Presumably because they are more closely related to us ideologically than are the Republicans we may be cavorting with.

My response was thus:

Quite frankly, I was shut down by “friends” and family members who would not even hear that Obama was a fraud… and that Hillary was a better choice.

When I moved to supporting MacPalin, I was harrassed to the point where I often chose to lie about who I was voting for. (I told them Nader, which they also ridiculed.)

At this point I will not discuss politics with the Leftie Dems I used to hang with. Even the most educated and rational of them went gaga over Obama… and I just can’t forgive them. So, I have a policy. No political discussion at all. My sister, who also switched to MacPalin, feels the same.

I would dearly appreciate it if some of you would help open the eyes of the Obot masses, so I can once again hold intelligent conversations with my friends. But I am not holding my breath waiting. Really I’m not. From now on my vote is “private." Unless they apologize profusely I will never tell my Leftie friends and family who I vote for again.

Now, I'd like to take a few moments in my own blog to expound on that sentiment. This is just me. But ... I suspect there are others like me.

*First of all... I can sincerely state that... no matter what happens in the future... at this point I am simply not ready to re-engage "the Left." See, I've learned quite a bit about their "dirty little elitist secrets" of coercion and shunning. What I learned was ugly. It bordered on facism. Honestly, I don't ever want anyone to think I am one of them again.

*A Second point I would like to make is that the GOP is the party of my grandpa. I am not uncomfortable with the GOP of his era. The one that protected the interests of small business and believed in small government. I am all for fiscal conservatism and a strong work ethic. Those are the things that made the USA what it is. They are the cornerstones of my upbringing. (And I hope, my children's.)

*Thirdly, I'll proudly state that I am pro-choice, pro-gay rights, and pro-women's equality. I want the government to stay out of my bedroom and out of my church-life. These are issues on which I have broken with the GOP in the recent past (since I was old enough to vote, in fact. Which seems like a lifetime to me... but is not all that long, historically speaking.)

BUT... I am not fool enough to believe that wedge issues will continue to be the GOP's focus. I expect change, in the not too distant future. You may be aware that there is a Civil War being waged within the Republican Party right now. If brave young women like Meghan McCain are willing to mount up and ride into battle on behalf of gay marriage ... I want to get behind them. For that reason, I am considering changing my party affiliation completely. I want to vote in their primaries! (Here in Ohio, primaries are closed.)

*The fourth point I'd like to make is... It is customary, in the U.S.A., for various constituencies to "switch parties" on about a forty year cycle. Never forget that Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King were Republicans. Most PUMAs are too young to remember this.... but if you study your history you know there was a reason for it. The GOP was once the "progressive" party. It can be again. And I hope it will!

*Final point: For my money, PUMAs have every bit as much of a chance to make earth shattering changes within the GOP as they do in the Democratic party. Probably more. Because the Republican party is currently in need of members and is reaching out to PUMAs.

I am not interested in looking back. The Obama coup is water over the damn as far as I am concerned. I am looking at the future.... and from where I sit, the party of my grandpa now holds the most promise. The party of my daddy has turned on him, and millions of other hard working people. The elitist few will never represent "we the people." They can't. They disdain us, as was evidenced by the name calling that went on during the 2008 primaries.

If the likes of Meghan McCain, Michael Steele, Steve Schmidt, Sarah Palin, and the Log Cabin Republicans fail to return the Republican party to it's former Lincolnian/ Kingian glory, PUMAs will be as much to blame as they are.

Why?

Because we looked back.

I am a (social) Liberal, And I am TOTALLY *OK* With This!

Meghan McCain is on the books as being "pro- gay rights!" Not a surprise, really. Because her dad voted against the Federal Marriage Amendment. At a time whe that was quite an unpopular thing for him to do.

In this case, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree I guess? If Ms. McCain is the future of the Republican Party ... I'm interested. Very, very interested!

It is also worth noting that HILLBUZZ is talking about their meeting with Michael Steele this week. And they seem to like him!

These two developments make a fiscal Conservative/ social Liberal like me, feel more and more comfortable that I will have someone to vote for in 2012.

HILLBUZZ is suggesting Sarah Palin or Mark Sanford. I can see where they are going with that. I'm OK with it. How about you?

What Doesn't Kill Us Will Make Her Stronger : Hillary to Sarah Converts Have Been Around This Block A Few Times

I was happy to read about the growing Democratic support for Sarah,
at HILLBUZZ today.

And I quote:

"We chuckled when we read the piece in Talking Points Memo because we’re coming from two different places, but arrive at the same conclusion. The TPM piece is WARNING Democrats to stop attacking Palin lest they make her President in 4 years. We think these lunatics should continue to attack Palin, because very soon someone on Team Sarah is going to find a way to really endear Palin to many Independents and Moderate Dems who won’t want to associate with liberal loons who engage in this sort of thing.

Independents and Moderates were alienated by the loony Right’s attacks on Hillary Clinton. To punish the Right, in a sense, those Independents and moderates (of both parties) sent Hillary Clinton to the Senate.

Who knows to what higher office Independents and Moderates will send Sarah Palin to punish the liberal loons?

We have a saying around here: sometimes the universe sends you the wrong French toast; you didn’t get what you wanted or ordered, but in the end, you end up getting an adventure that takes you somewhere unexpected you never dreamed you’d go.

All the nastiness, pettiness, and downright evil Obama supporters continue to fling at Sarah Palin are, collectively, a heaping helping of the wrong French toast."

And then my own response to HillBuzz:

Such a wonderful essay! And, yes, I am one of those Independents/ former Democrats that doesn’t want to be associated with this kind of crazy. So I have joined Team Sarah … and I am fighting for her. Just the way I did for Hillary.

Don’t write Sarah off when it comes to gay issues. Sarah will uphold the law, and the constitution. She has recently appointed a “pro-gay” “activist” judge to the Alaska Supreme Court.

This is not because Sarah (or her appointee) are “gay activists” BTW. It is because the law is the law. And fair is fair. We (I am the mom of a gay son) will win in the end.

Long live Sarah Palin! What doesn’t kill us, will make her stronger. And, us Hillary to Sarah converts ain’t the type to lay down and die!
